The Tau Delta Chapter, born
of 'The Notorious' Gamma Psi Chapter, of Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is established at Florida
International University. Tau Delta was founded
by Brother Wellington Richards. This outstanding
Brother saw a large African-American student population
that needed to form a postive unity. This unity
was formed through Alpha Phi Alpha.
FIU already had some presence of The Divine Nine
in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Phi Beta
Sigma Fraternity, Inc., but had not yet been graced
with the presence of Alpha. In 1995, Brother Kenneth
Lundy transferred to FIU from the University of
California-Davis, and brought with him an Alpha
presence. Upon graduation in 1996, Kenneth accepted
a job working in Student Minority Services and began
spreading the word of what an Alphaman is. In the
summer of 1997, Kenneth met Wellington, who transferred
from St. Augustine College in North Carolina, where
he pledged at 'The Notorious' Gamma Psi Chapter.
That summer, Wellington and Kenneth began working
together to get the presence of Alpha recognized
across campus. They were successfully reaching the
entire campus, with Kenneth focusing on the administrators
and Wellington on the students.
The Brothers were deteremined, and instead of just
walking around in Black and Old Gold all day handing
out flyers, they did things the Alpha-Way, networking.
Wellington joined the Caribbean Students Organization
on campus, and Kenneth joined the male African-American
organization, 500 Role Models.
In 1998, the Tau Delta Chapter was proposed to the
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. State Convention,
which was held in the Bahamas that year. There it
was approved, thus forming the foundation of the
Chapter.
The founding line of Tau Delta consisted of Mustafa
Strachan and Seth Crapp. Their linename's are Faceoff
and Nutty Professor, the name of their line is Know
Thy Self, and they crossed in Spring '99. Wellington
was their Dean of Pledges.
